Crochet Vegetable Bag Pattern

About the Pattern

I recently started making my own crochet vegetable bags and I really love using them so I created a crochet pattern to share with you all. You know how I love to design useful crochet projects :)

We’ve been saving and reusing all the plastic bags we collect for some time but they have now started to become unusable. We are slowly recycling them all and replacing them with these hemp bags instead and they work so well!

Like most of my crochet patterns, I designed something that we needed in our own lives to fix a problem that we have trying to live a more sustainable life.

Pattern Details

The pattern includes 3 different sizes so that whatever kind of fruit and veg you are buying there is a bag for it. A small one for things like garlic and ginger, a medium one for mushrooms or carrots and a larger one for veg like broccoli or cauliflower.

Approximate Measurements

Small: 10cm x 12cm (4” x 5”)
Medium: 20cm x 22cm (8” x 8.5”)
Large: 32cm x 28cm (12” x 12.5”)

What You Will Need

Yarn: Roughly 40 (140, 300) yards, 8 (25, 55) grams, 40 (125, 275) meters of lace weight yarn. I used hemp yarn. You can use something similar like organic cotton or linen (see below for other yarn suggestions).
Hook: 2.6mm - Metric | 12 - UK & Canada | B-1 - US | 4/0 - Japan
Scissors: For cutting the end.
Small Darning Needle: Small enough to fit through the holes of the button you will be using and for weaving in the ends.
Button or toggle: To be able to close the bag.
Stitch Markers: To help count up your foundation chain for the tie.

Other Yarn Suggestions

Here are some yarn alternatives that I think would work really well with this pattern.

Gauge

Base: 27 sts and 13 rows over 10cm (4”)
V Stitch: 6 sts and 9 rows over 10cm (4”)

Skill Level and Crochet Terms

The pattern is easy and beginner friendly, written in English and available in both U.S. and U.K. terms (you will receive one PDF with two separate patterns). All the stitches are explained and there are progress photos to help.

Design and Construction

It has a unique V shaped stitch, hence the name and an easy to open and close drawstring with a button/toggle to keep your veggies from rolling around the shopping basket.

Sticky labels are easily taken off and they’re washable and reusable.

Both the pattern and the yarn are available in the shop. I really hope you enjoy making them, once you get the hang of the stitch it’s a really easy, meditative pattern that you can do whilst watching your favourite series or listening to a podcast.

I really love to see your finished projects so make sure you tag me in your photos on social and use the hashtag #VforVeggiesProduceBag.
