How to Single Crochet for Beginners

What is the Single Crochet Stitch?

The single crochet is the second easiest basic crochet stitch for beginners to learn after completing my step by step guide on how to crochet.

There are 6 different basic crochet stitches to learn that are used in most crochet patterns. Once you have these under your belt, you will be ready to tackle any beginner friendly crochet patterns.

You can check the list of basic crochet stitches in my blog about crochet terminology which includes a conversion chart from UK crochet terms to US.

How is the Single Crochet Abbreviated?

In most patterns you will find a list of abbreviations that tell you what is what, however usually the single crochet is abbreviated with the letters SC. This is the US terminology for this stitch. In the UK, it is called the Double Crochet and is abbreviated with the letters DC.

How Should Each Row Start?

When working the single crochet, each row should start with a chain 1. The chain 1 is the turning chain used to bring the yarn up to the correct height for the stitch.

So before working a single crochet row, begin with a chain 1. Then start working your first single crochet into the last stitch of the previous round.

With a foundation chain, make the chain as wide as you would like your project to be, then chain 1 and then begin working back across the foundation chain, missing that last chain 1.

How to Crochet the Single Crochet Stitch

So, let’s get to it. How do we actually work the single crochet. It’s actually really simple. If you’ve followed my learn to crochet series you will find the following instructions really easy.

  1. Insert your hook under both loops of the next stitch. If you’re starting with a foundation chain, just go under the top loop.

  2. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. You should have two loops on your hook.

  3. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.

    That’s it! So easy.

Once you have a few rows of these stitches you should end up with a sample that looks something like the photo below.
