How to Hold Yarn or Wool When Crocheting - Tutorial Three

In tutorial three of the How to Crochet Step by Step mini series we will go through how to hold your yarn or wool when you’re crocheting.

Everyone holds the yarn slightly differently so again there is no right or wrong way but here I explain how I hold mine and the reasons why I hold it that way.

Below is a quick YouTube video if you prefer to watch rather than read through instructions. Scroll past to find the written information below.

Written Instructions

  1. Start by wrapping the working yarn around your little finger.

  2. Keep the yarn going under your ring finger.

  3. Then in between your ring finger and middle finger.

  4. Finally, over your middle finger and index finger.

Why I hold it this way

Holding it like this means that I can hold my work with my index finger and thumb. By raising my middle finger slightly, I can create space for me to yarn over and my ring finger and little finger control my tension. If I want my tension to be tighter (my stitches to be tighter) then I can squeeze both my ring and little finger to do that or let go for less tension.
