It’s so satisfying to be able to use crochet to help our families. What better way to make use of this skill than to be able to follow one of these crochet hat patterns for infants to protect our babies from the strong rays of the sun.

Not only that but we can also choose the colours, the weight of yarn and also the fibre to make sure we are protecting both our babies health and the environment as much as we can.

Here is a list of 10 baby hat crochet patterns that I love.

Which Yarns to Choose for Infant Hats?

I will always recommend a sustainable cotton yarn for a baby’s hat.

Cotton is a natural fibre but also hard wearing which makes it perfect for wearable items that will be washed over and over.

It is also breathable, hypoallergenic and gentle on delicate skin. Cotton will help to regulate our baby's body temperature and absorb moisture.

Which Cotton Yarns Are Best?

Which cotton yarns are best for infants and sustainable? Is standard cotton ok?

My recommendation is to buy an organic cotton yarn that is specifically suitable for babies so that you know it will be soft and gentle. Not all cottons are the same.

Recycled cotton can be more rough on the skin and standard cotton will have been sprayed with pesticides whilst growing and dyed with harmful dyes.

Also keep an eye out for certificates like GOTS or OEKO-TEX standard 100. Read more about what these mean in my article about sustainable yarns.

Here are some of my favourites. Make sure you check the weight to see if it matches with your chosen project.
