Summer is on the way! This doesn’t mean you have to put down your crochet hooks. On the contrary. There are so many eco friendly summer crochet patterns to choose from and this is a great time to use our crochet skills to make some zero waste swaps that will reduce our summer environmental impact.

Summer often means more waste with extra plastic water bottles and ice creams being bought. Spur of the moment trips to the beach and the heat of the sun sometimes forces us to make quick decisions; so let’s be more prepared by crocheting some reusables.

Which Yarns to Use for Summer Projects?

Summer items tend to go through a lot more wear and tear than other items because of the heat. We sweat more during the summer months and so we also wash more. The best yarn for items that need to be washed over and over is cotton.

Cotton is plant based but also hard wearing which makes it perfect for summer crochet patterns like the ones listed here.

Yarn Recommendations

The best cotton yarn, or the most eco friendly, is the one you already have in your stash. Even if it’s a standard cotton yarn. It’s always better to use what you have than buy something new. Just make sure its 100% and it will be perfect for any of these patterns.

If you don’t already have any and need to buy something new then the most eco friendly options are organic or recycled cotton. I’ve listed some of my favourites below. Be sure to check the weight to see if it matches with the pattern you want to work on.
